Bactericidal PVP-iodine complexes - useful in medicine, for plant protection and in disinfectant compsn.

Neutral complexes of polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) and iodine which are insoluble in water and organic solvents, are new. They are slow-release antibacterial agents for use in human and veterinary medicine, as plant protection agents and in disinfection, e.g. of drinking water, swimming pools, etc. The compsns. do not give rise to a very acid reaction by reaction of iodine in aq. media and the complexes do not lose a third of the iodine as do known compsns. The complexes are prepd. by heating PVP with elementary iodine (0.5-18%) for 4-10 hr. at 50-120 degrees C after prepliminary stirring at room temp.
