The short or vertical takeoff aircraft has reaction engine and front and rear thrust nozzles, provided with jet deflectors. The air resistance is reduced for supersonic flight by closing front nozzles which do not contribute to supersonic flight power. The engine has a first compressor (11) supplied with air through the first section (2) of the inlet. A second compressor (16) of the basic engine has a valve for deflecting air flow from the first compressor to the second one. This valve guides, in its second engine operating mode, an airstream from first compressor to the front thrust nozzle (18) and guides air from a second part (17) of the inlet to the second compressor.
