The gas burner has a discharge chamber (3) which is 'T' shaped in cross section with a block (4) mounted on top, separating two rows of gas discharge holes (2, 2a). The block is rectangular in cross section, and the flames (11) travel upwards parallel to its vertical sides. At the top, the block terminates in a T shaped portion (14), giving a groove (5, 5a) each side. This groove gives an effective heat output for gas which is rich in nitrogen when the depth (L4) of the grooves and the height (L3) are approximately equal and when the height (L1) of the bottom of the groove from the base (3) is seven to nine times the depth (L4). The distance (e) between the centre line of the flame and the side of the block (4) is a tenth of the height (L1).
