acid hydrazides of formula (I) (where R1=H or (II) are used in the prepn. of 2-oxo-pyrrolidino acetamide of formula (Ia) by reduction pref. by hydrogenation under press. in the presence of a catalyst. (I) are psychotherapeutics used as nootropic agents and have superior activity to (Ia). (Ia) (piracetame) is used against kinetosis (e.g. seasickness), for treatment of senile involution as a nootropic agent having favourable influence on the learning aptitude. (I) is used to treat cerebral sclerosis and memmory losses due to circulatory troubles caused by alcoholism or traumatism. They are generally administered orally in daily doses of 1.2-2.4g pref. as unit doses of 100-500 mg (esp. 200-400mg).
