The press for chipboard, plywood or fibrous material with surfaces to be heat treated, and which require preheating before being compressed between the upper (6b) and lower (6a) press plates, includes a handling system designed to ensure the correct dwell time for preheating. The stacked material (1) is inserted between the press plates by a suction wagon (4) which travels inwards from one side, assisted by a belt conveyor (7) on another wagon (5) which travels inwards from the other side. The suction wagon also employs gripping jaws (9). Both wagons are then retracted, and also the track (2) on which they travel, during the pressing operation. During preheating the material can be supported by rods (12) located between the press plates.
