The measuring method determines the loss of thermal energy in fluid flowing in a conduit. Flat fluid from a heat source flows in conduit (1) to a distribution network. Returning fluid in conduit (3) is directed past a valve (8) to a volumetric flow rate (7). A by pass branch (6) shunts the fluid around the flow meter (7). A pair of heat sensors (12) (13) are located, one in each of the hot conduit (1) and by pass conduit (6). Temperature imbalance between the two sensors is used to control actuation of the valve (8).
