The laser beam is used for marking out or machining shapes in a material and is guided in its movements by following an image projected onto a fluid screen. This image (7) is displayed onto the front of the screen (2), using a projector (1). Immediately over this is the laser unit (4). As the image is displayed, the visible laser beam (5) is moved manually around its profile. This traces the shape onto the material (6) for processing, placed behind the screen with its surface parallel. The screen can also be used for coded information, the variation in energy when passed through being detected behind.
