The upper and lower sections (2, 3) are connected by a tapered tongue (6) which fits into a channel (7). The wall of the channel (9) is pressed inwards to retain the tongue (6). The joint may run either part or the entire length of the bumper. The lower section has a protrusion (5) on its forward face to which a protruding rubber bumper strip is fixed. The strip encloses the joint. This form of construction avoids the breakdown of rustproofing associated with welded joints. The contact surfaces of the joint may be keyed and grooved or otherwise developed to increase strength.
