A high-mol. alkenyl substd. lactone prod. (I) is prepd. by (a) mixing an alkenyl-succinic acid, where the alkenyl radical has mol. wt. 300-3000 (700-2000) esp. 800-1200, with H2SO4, HClO4, p-toluene sulphonic acid, BF3 etherate or a sulphonic acid ion exchange resin, as protonating agent or electron pair acceptor, to form an anhydrous mixt and (b) reacting at is not 100 degrees C, esp. 90-99 degrees C until infrared spectra at 5.66 and 5.74 mu indicate conversion of the alkenyl-succinic acid to (I). (I) is obtd. in improved yield e.g. is not 50 (85) moles % w.r.t. alkenyl-succinic acid. (I) is a dispersant for motor fuels.
