A process is claimed to effect mixing, heat transfer and/or mass transfer operations between =1 liq. and one other material, with or without a chemical reaction between the materials treated. The patent also includes the apparatus for the execution of the process. The liquid to be mixed is divided periodically into many partial currents, the channel carrying each partial current widening and narrowing at least once along its length. The process is such that the liquid is divided at least twice into partial currents which are then re-united. The direction of flow is constantly reversed; the frequency of the directional changes being regulated in such a way that the speed of movement of the material is always either accelerating or retarding.
