The machine sorts postal packets into selected compartments and comprises a series of adjoining inclined surfaces (11, 22, 33). Packets (5) are deposited on the first inclined surface (11) and pushed upwards by an arm (a). The packet enters a slot (13) in the arm (b) for the second inclined surface (22), waiting at the junction formed by the difference in height of the surfaces. The packet is carried upwards (20) to the next pusher arm (c). The cycle continues until the packet reaches its destination. It then falls (26) off the inclined surface onto that below and the arm reverses (27) direction to push it through (28) an aperture (A) into the compartment (2) below.
