A tubular vessel which can be used as a mixer or a heat exchange or both comprises an outer shell in which are baffles and through which the prod. being processed flows longitudinally. The baffles are bars of round section placed diametrially, one after the other in cross formation. The appts. can be used for mixing liquids, powders, gases and viscous and fragile prods. aerating liqs. e.g. waste water, emulsification, preparing solns. e.g. of sugar. It can also be used for heating or cooling e.g. pastes, jams, fruit pulps, incorporating products at specific temps. eg pectin in jams, and for heat recovery. The advantages include, beside the possibility of simultaneous mixing and heat exchange, rapid mixing, high thermal transfer efficiency, continuous operation, rigorous control and observation.
