Mica and quartz sand are obtd. from kaolinitic mineral during prodn. of kaolinite, by forming a suspension of the kaolinite leaving a residue of quartz sand and mica, then centrifuging or vibrating the residue to separate the quartz sand and the mica. The kaolin suspension is formed by slaking the ore, sepg. the coarse sand and mica, then carrying out a second sepn. to remove fine sand and mica. Either or both solid fractions may be treated to separate the quartz and the mica. Material previously considered unusable is utilised, the urea after grinding, in paints, plastics, joining rings, mastics etc. and the white quartz sand in white cements, concrete building panels etc.
