The device is for timing a game of chess and comprises a pair of electrically driven clocks. The clocks are driven by respective motors (10) powered by an electrical supply over common lines (34) derived from a transformer (35). Respective switches (31) are employed to switch the clocks in or out simultaneously. Each clock unit (100, 200) has a warning lamp (71) indicating which player is being timed. The control switches are multi-polar and direct power supply over channels (98, 99) when actuated by respective players.
