Mechanical or electrical negative resistance - operates with high gain amplifier and feedback loop with three resistors in series

A negative resistance is used for both electrical and mechanical applications, i.e. as a circuit in the former case and as a mechanical arrangement in the latter. Both applications utilise a detector providing an output which is a function of voltage or of physical displacement on an electrical or mechanical line respectively. In the electrical case the line includes three series resistors (r1, r2, r3) the line input and the junction of the second and third resistors feeding the two inputs (9, 11) of a high grain operational amplifier (10). The output (16) of this is connected directly back into the line to achieve the voltage providing the negative resistance effect. A similar feedback loop is achieved in the mechanical case by an amplifier and motor.
