Character reader for phototypesetting machine - moves drawn character stepwise relative to opto-electronic system during scanning to produce italic latin character

The appts. scans characters to read data from drawings into the store of a photo type setting machine for use in subsequently producing type. To produce a record of italic characters in the phototypesetting machine, a drawing of the character is used having the upright stroke of the character vertical, and the cross strokes of the character inclined to the horizontal. In scanning the character, the position of the document is moved stepwise after each scan, so that the character formed in the store of the phototypesetting machine has the required italic slope angle.
