Imidazole-4,5-di:carboxamide derivs. - useful as herbicides for selective pre=emergence or post=emergence control of weeds and grasses (BE 6.9.78)

Imidazole derivs. of formula (I) are new In (I) R1 is H, 1-10C alkyl or 2-10C alkenyl or alkynyl; R2-R4 are h, halogen, CF3O or opt. fluorinated 1-3C alkyl, or one is MeO and at least one of the others is halogen, CF3O or opt. fluorinated 1-3C alkyl. Cpds. (I) are herbicides with low mammalin toxicity (LD50 = 500-1000 mg./kg., p.o., mouse). They can be used e.g. for selective post-emergence control of annual broad-leaved weeds in cereal and beet crops, for selective pre-emergence control of annual grasses and weeds in cereal, cotton, soay and potato crops, for weed control amongst trees, or for total weed control at high application rates (2-20 kg./ha.). A typical cpd. is 1-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)-N,N'-dimethyl-4,5-imidazoledicarboxamide. In an example, this is prepd. from the corresp. dicarboxylic acid.
