Copper wire of predetermined dia., weakly alloyed with cadmium, is annealed and then submitted to a tensioning by reduction of its dia. through a drawing process until a desired dia. is achieved. Pref. the cadmium content of the wire is 0.9-1.2% and the annealing is carried out for 6-10 hrs. at 300-500 degrees C. Copper wire of dia. 1.20 mm is typically drawn to the range 0.46-0.54 mm; 1.00 mm to the range of 0.38-0.44 mm; and 0.90 mm to the range of 0.32-0.36 mm.
