The diesel engine (2) has a speed controller (1) and drives a main alternator (4) and double shaft exciter (5, 6). The exciter shaft (5) excites the alternator and its field (7) is fed by a magnetic amplifier (6). The three phase supply from the exciter (5) is rectified by a bridge (9). Which feeds the alternator field (10). For braking, the fields (12, 13, 14) of the traction motors are in series, fed from a rheostat bridge (15) and the main alternator. The armatures (15, 16, 17) act as separately excited generators, driven by the locomotive wheels and fixed resistances (18, 19, 20). The current from the bridge (15) is joined to that (7) of the exciter (5) and is proportional to engine speed, using an excitation regulator (8).
