Asymmetrical substd. hydrazines are prepd. by treating excess ammonia in the cold with an alkali metal hypochlorite in a water-immiscible solvent to form monochloramine, and this is treated with excess of a primary or secondary amine in the presence of NaOH. The products, eps. dimethyl hydrazine, or liquid propellants, and plant growth regulators. The process is easy to carry out, gives good yields (e.g. 83%) and gives rise to less toxicity, pollution and explosion problems than conventional methods.
