Tri:cycloalkyl-tin halide and hydroxide cpds. prodn. - by adding Grignard cpd. in ether to stannic halide in diluent, used as fungicide and intermediate
Prodn. of tricycloalkyl-Sn halides (I) involves reaction of a cycloalkyl Mg halide Grignard cpd. (II) with a Sn (IV) halide (III) in 3+0.3:1, pref. 2.8-3.05:1 molar ratio by adding a soln. of (II) in an ether to (III) in an inert liquid diluent. In (II), the cycloalkyl gp. is cyclohexyl, opt. with 1-3 1-4C alkyl substits., whilst the halogen in (II) and (III) is Cl, Br or I. The novel features are that the amt. of (III) is under 25, pref. 15-25 or 10-25 wt. % of the amt. of inert diluent and that addn. is carried out with stirring, so that a mixt. contg (I) forms. (I) are converted to the corresp. hydroxide (IV) by treatment with aq. alkali. (I) and (IV) can be used as fungicides or as intermediates for the prodn. of other tricycloalkyl-Sn cpds. The reverse addn. process is simpler than usual and gives good (I) yields.
