The process is for the physical properties of a subterranean structure (1) such as a foundation pile which comprises the application of shock waves to the structure by an impulse generator (4). Shock waves propagated in the structure are transmitted through the surrounding ground. A bore hole (3) is drilled alongside the structure and a vibration detector (7) connected by a control line (6) to synchronous analysis unit (8), is lowered to varying depths at which propagated shock waves are monitored. The shape and size of the structure may be determined in this way.
