Vehicle safety belt release mechanism - has retainer fixed to chassis and causing relatively movable components under shock load

The mechanism releases a vehicle safety belt in the event of a shock exceeding a predetermined amount. It has two mechanical components which detachably engage together, the first (3) being coupled to the belt and the second (4) to the vehicle chassis (2) via a spring (7) causing the components to pull on the belt. A device (8) fixed to the chassis causes the components to separate and release the belt if, under a shock load, the relative movement between it and the components allowed by the spring (7) exceeds a predetermined value. Release can be arranged to occur at the end of movement in the outwards direction.
