1503330 Burning waste gases HOUILLERES DU BASSIN DE LORRAINE 31 Oct 1975 [6 Nov 1974] 45348/75 Heading F4B Waste gases of low calorific value, such as by products from the carbonization of coal, which are produced at close to atmospheric pressure, are introduced through a burner 12 into a combustion chamber 1 at the available low pressure and at a temperature of 600-900‹ C., and not more than 80% of the stoichiometric air necessary for combustion is introduced at the level of the burner, sufficient secondary air is supplied to the base of the flame to maintain a flame temperature of 1000-1300‹ C., and the combustion products are discharged through a chimney. The primary air supplied to the burner 12 through passages 14 surrounding the gas nozzle 13 is controlled in accordance with the temperature at a sensor 17 in the upper part of the combustion chamber, and the secondary air supplied by nozzles 19 to the base of the flame is controlled by the temperature sensed by a device 20. Additional secondary air delivered through outlets 22 cools the vertical wall of the chamber 1. Air blown into the base of the chimney by a fan 23 is controlled to maintain the temperature at a sensor 24 in the chimney lower than 600‹ C. The apparatus may use the natural chimney draught, or the gases may be passed through a heat exchanger 4 by a fan 44 having a damper controlled by the chimney temperature sensor 24. The arrangement enables hot waste gases having solid particles and liquid or tarry material in suspension to be burned without first cooling the gases or passing them through a fan.
