1523779 Soil testing S MARCHETTI 31 Oct 1975 [31 Oct 1974] 45173/75 Heading G1S A soil testing probe comprises, a pressure chamber 2, Fig. 2, supplied with compressed gas through a conduit 18, membranes 7 fixed to either side by clamping rings 8 and gaskets 9, electrically insulated washers 10 supporting the membranes, a cylinder 11 provided with a gas inlet 12 and a gas outlet 13 connected to a conduit 17, a spring 16 acting against a piston 15 slidable in the cylinder, and electrical contacts x, y connected to but separable from the membranes. The cylinder 11 and piston 15 together act as a valve controlling the compressed gas supply and press against the internal surfaces of the membranes after passing through central holes in the washers 10. A control panel at the surface is provided to supply a source of pressurized gas, a manometer or other pressure gauge and electric warning lights. In operation, the probe is pressed into the soil and compressed air is fed into the chamber 2 through conduit 18. This air acts on the membranes 7 and pushes them out into contact with the soil and away from electrical contacts x, y which thus signal the initial movement. The initial pressure is then read. Gas inflow is then continued to further expand the membranes, and this causes the spring 16 to displace the piston 15 and cylinder 11 to left and right respectively and uncover the discharge air port 13. At this point an equilibrium situation is created between the internal and external pressures and another pressure reading is taken. The two readings are then used to calculate a deformability modulus for the soil. An electrical transducer may be used instead of the pneumatic system described.
