A stirring apparatus especially for wetting or aerating powders has a stirrer as at 2 rotatable about the vessel axis and about its own axis and with its lower end spaced from the vessel axis, a device to produce a vortex on the material in the vessel nearer the vessel axis than the lower end of the stirrer, and means 17 to inject a gas or atomized liquid into the vortex. As shown the vortex producing device comprises a disc 19 having upward projections 20 and carried by the injection pipe 17 which is rotatable independently of the stirrer assembly. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown) the injection pipe carries a baffle plate (48) having vortex-producing wings (51, 52), and further wings (49, 50) are carried by a separately rotatable coaxial bush (37), the lower ends of the screws (23) being unsupported. There may be a plurality of injection pipes and vortex-producing devices spaced from the vessel axis.
