Compsn. for inhibiting the growth of plants comprises an aq. soln. or dispersion of a water-insol., hydrophilic, acrylic polymer and an effective quantity of a maleic hydrazide deriv. The plant growth inhibitor is released giving prolonged activity. The compsn. may be used to control growth of grass, trees etc. in parks, golf courses and urban areas. To is applied at 1.2-9.1 1/100m2. The polymer is suitably based on monomer units (a) of formula CH2=CRCOOR1 (where R = H or methyl and R1 = HO(CH2)n-, (HO(CH2)n-O-(CH2)n- or R2O-(CH2)n-O-(CH2)n; R2 = 1-3C alkyl and n = 1,2 or 3) and is pref. cross-linked by cpds. having two ethylenic bonds such as ethyleneglycol diacrylate, diethyleneglycol dimethylacrylate, propyleneglycol dimethacrylate etc. or (b) of formula CH2 = CRCOOR1 (where R = H or triglycidylic ethers; low molecular weight epoxy resins, methylated melamines, low molecular weight melamine-formaldehyde resins or salts, oxides and hydroxides of multivalent metals. The crosslinking a agent comprises 1-5wt. % of the acrylic polymer.
