The compositions comprising alkali metal silicate solution, inorganic powder containing at least 15% kaolinite and water soluble alkali-resistant polymer have excellent storage stability. In some embodiments the polymer may be wholly or partly replaced by finely divided silicon dioxide. Preferred embodiments comprise a solution of alkali metal silicate containing a substance which mineralogically contains more than 20 % kaolinite and also water-soluble alkali-resistant organic polymer. The compositions are useful for application to mineral fibres and as insulation materials for metallic or non-metallic substances.
