A copolymerisable long-chain monomer is prepared. The process of preparation comprises subjecting an olefinically unsaturated, anionically polymerisable monomer to an anionic polymerisation in the presence of a polymerisation initiator to form a monofunctional living polymer having a uniform molecular weight within the range from 5000 to 50 000 and terminally blocking (tipping, capping) the living polymer with a halogen-substituted epoxide or a halogen-substituted vinyl compound which are each free of silicon atoms with the elimination of an alkali metal halide. The resulting macromonomers with polymerisable, olefinically unsaturated end groups are then reacted with a second, unsaturated comonomer to form a graft copolymer, the latter comonomer forming the backbone of the graft copolymer and the macromonomer the side chains.
