Essentially epoxy-free paint binders are prepared by reacting Mannich bases with at least one epoxy resin. The Mannich bases are obtained from condensed phenols, secondary amines and formaldehyde. The paint binders are suitable in protonated form for the cathodic electrocoating of electroconductive surfaces.
