In the hydrostatic extrusion of a billet of aluminium or aluminium alloy, the billet is coated with a polyethylene wax and preheated to a temperature of at least 130 DEG C before it is subjected to the hydrostatic pressure. Particularly preferred polyethylene waxes for this purpose are those in which the polyethylenes have a molecular weight of at least 5,000.
