Aq adhesives contg copolymers of vinyl esters - and etherified N-methylol derivs of allyl carbamate, avoiding excessive viscosity

An aq. adhesive emulsion, which becomes water-resistant on curing, contains a copolymer of 40-99.5% of a vinyl ester of a is not 18C satd. aliphatic monocarboxylic acid and 0.5-15% (2-10%) of a 1-8C (1-4C) alcohol ether of an N-methylol deriv. of an allyl carbamate of formula (where R1 is H or CH3, R2 is a 2-4C alkylidene gp. R3 is the residue of the 1-8C etherifying alcohol, Z is H or -CH2OR3 and n = 0-10) any balance of the copolymer is a non-reactive monoethylenic monomer. Emulsion copolymsn. is in presence of 0.5-10% of a OH-functional protective colloid. Pre-reaction of the ether with the protective colloid is prevented, and the viscosity of the aq. emulsion is not too high. Baking at moderate temp. causes volatilisation of the alcohol and regeneration of the methylol gp. which reacts rapidly, giving water-resistance. Copolymers of 90% vinyl acetate and 10% N-methylol ether give good adhesives for wood. Inclusion of ethylene in a terpolymer gives good adhesives for laminating plastic films, e.g. PVC, to paper or wood, or for carpet backing.
