Cancelling switch for season tickets - severs portion of ticket only if inserted ticket has acceptable thickness and width

A cancelling machine for use as a ticket system employing season tickets is equipped with ticket sensing devices for determining whether an inserted ticket has a preselected configuration and dimensions. If a ticket is acceptable a portion is severed by the machine in payment of a fare. The ticket strip has two parallel longitudinal grooves so that upon insertion into the cancelling machine the end of the strip is bent by the jaws of the machine into a truncated V shape. When a ticket of the correct configuration is inserted, three microswitches are actuated by pins to operate the machine. The ticket strip is preferably made from extruded plastics.
