Flame retarding cellulosic material - using aqueous reaction product of phosphoric acid or ammonium salt with an alkylene oxide

Flame retarded cellulosic matl. contains a reaction prod of an aq. soln. of phosphoric acid or an acid ammonium salt of phosphoric acid and an alkylene oxide. The phosphoric acid is pref. orthophosphoric acid and the alkylene oxide is ethylene oxide. Using phosphoric acid the prod. is pref. neutralised with ammonia or an amino. The reaction prod. is partic. for treating cotton, paper and wood. The soln. for the reaction with the alkylene oxide is pref. 7-25% strength and sufficient alkylene oxide is used to form a 4-15%, partic. 7-11%, soln. of the reaction prod. The method is cheap both in matls. and equipment reqd. The surface of the matls. are not adversely affected and the prod. is non-irritant.
