Surgical suturing instrument has a stop housing with a groove and a flat frame which has a support bar at 90 deg. to the groove and a flat section facing the groove with elevations on it to bend the clip feet round. A clip housing in the groove can move along it, and has a head in which is fitted a clip carrier. A clip plunger is connected to the clip housing for longitudinal displacement. The clip housing and plunger can be driven. The groove of the stop housing is laterally open at 90 deg. to the plane of the frame. The clip-housing carries the plunger in the given direction in the groove and can be removed from it. Sutures may be made precisely in a limited space without damaging the sutured tissues, and the sutures are more elastic and enlargement of the opening of tubular organs can be produced by application of a lateral longitudinal suture to the wall.
