1469625 Synthesis gas production COGAS DEVELOPMENT CO 2 April 1975 [12 April 1974] 13506/75 Heading C5E In a method of gasifying char to produce synthesis gas in which a bed 12 of char is reacted in a fluidized bed reactor 10 with a stream 16 of superheated steam which acts as a fluidizing gas, heat is supplied to the gasification zone by passing through it a stream 27 of hot agglomerated ash particles derived from the char; the agglomerated ash particles are formed in an agglomerating combustion reactor 43 maintained above agglomerating temperatures, by combustion of fines from the gasifier 10, and the thus-agglomerated particles are passed into a main combustion zone 28 where they are maintained below agglomerating temperatures but at a temperature sufficient to sustain the gasification in reactor 10. As shown, the stream of synthesis gas produced passes through cyclones 22 and 11, and the fines separated are passed to the main combustor 28 and agglomerating combustor 43 by lines 26, 49 where they are burned with air (lines 30, 50) to provide the necessary heat. Ash particles are recycled to the main combustor 28 via line 17, are reheated, and pass back into the gasifier via lift tube 19 and separator 23.
