A motor vehicle alternator regulator system comprises a battery 4, an alternator 23 having a field winding 22, and a regulator circuit 1, including a first terminal 15 connected through an ignition switch 16 to the positive pole of battery 4 and which supplies current to the field winding 22, and a second input terminal 2 which is connected through the emitter-collector path of a transistor 7 to a potential divider comprising resistors 8 and 9. The junction of resistors 8 and 9 is connected to a zener diode 17 which controls the field excitation through transistors 18, 30 & 20. A pair of resistors 13 and 14 are connected between terminal 15 and earth, and the junction of these transistors is connected to the base of a transistor 10 which controls transistor 7. When the ignition switch 16 is open, and consequently the current supply to the field winding 22 is removed, transistors 7, 10 are rendered non-conductive so that the current consumption of the potential divider is zero.
