A pilot trough contains a sample of soil and plants typical of a sector of the growing area. The trough is balanced on a knife edge. When the soil dries the trough tips to the left, opening a valve. The main irrigation supply is via a pipe to pilot controlled valves. Opening the valve causes pilot pressure so that a second valve opens and water is supplied to one sector and also to the trough. When sufficient water has been supplied, the trough tips so the valves close.
