MARINE WET EXHAUST SYSTEM AND IMPROVEMENTS IN POWERED MARINE VESSEL

AbstractA marine exhaust system comprising an exhaustgas-cooling water separation chamber, a gas collectionchamber and gas acceleration and gas flow-shaping conduit.The entrance of the separation chamber is connectableto water coolant and gas exhaust tubes from a marineengine. The separation chamber is fitted with a waterdeflector disposed below the gas exit from that chamber,while a gas dam is disposed in the water exit from thatchamber, the entrance and water exit being below thedeflector level. Gases from the separation chamber areexhausted through the gas collection chamber, the gasacceleration chamber, and the gas flow-shaping conduitin series to an exhaust outlet. The conduit com-prises a gas velocity tube which is connected to andextends downstream of the gas acceleration chamber tocause exhaust gases to exit through the hull of the boatin which the syst m may be installed with sufficient forceto penetrate the turbulent boundary layer of air developedaround the boat hull when the boat is in motion, thuseliminating the tendency of the gases to pass back intothe rear of the boat from the "station wagon" effect.An air dilution tube can be connected to the gas velocitytube to provide a scarfing action by the exhaust gases,causing their dilution to below noxious levels. Thesystem may include exhaust noise-retarding means, such asa muffler and/or air barrier at the separation chamberentrance.
