In the shaft furnace installation, the material to be burned and the hot waste gases pass through the combustion zone (3) in unidirectional flow in order to avoid overheating of the material to be burned. On the other hand, by means of the counterflow operation in the preheating zone (2) and in the cooling zone (4), the expensive and occasionally fault-prone construction of known installations which are operated completely or partially in unidirectional flow is avoided. Cooling air flows through cooling-air inlet openings (9) into the cooling zone (4) and leaves it through cooling-air outlet openings (10). It is mixed with hot waste gases from the waste-gas outlet openings (12). The mixture is guided through a heat-exchange device (14-16) in order to warm the fresh air supplied to the burners (5), which if appropriate has some mixture added to it via a pipe (22). Fans (8, 16, 19, 20) delivering cooling air, fresh air and mixture are regulated in such a manner that the pressure difference between mixture inlet openings (18) and waste-gas inlet openings (24, 25) on the one hand and cooling-air outlet openings (10) and waste-gas outlet openings (12) on the other hand is in each case 0.
