The friction plates for a multiple plate friction coupling, partic. for automotive gears are divided into several segments, contained in a cage between dividing plates retained by toothing and attached to a hub. The friction plate part segments are portions of a full disc circle (58), with equal outer and inner curvature. Three such segments, each enclosing an angle of 120 deg., are arranged around the periphery. The segments have inner toothing (66) with radially extending tooth flanks. On the outer curve is a complimentary toothing (70). On both sides of each segment (58) is a friction lining (68) which covers the complimentary toothing.
