The mechanism glues and folds over the end flaps of cartons in a machine having a conveyor for the cartons with a station alongside it applying the glue, followed by tools folding and pressing the flaps into place. In the gluing station (34) there ae additional folding tools, which shut the end flaps (31) of a carton in the station in the event of the conveyor stopping. - These tools can be in the form of hinging flaps on both sides of the conveyor, and they can have extensions overlapping the rear of the next tools when swung into positions. There can be a gluing station each side of the conveyor, each with a pair of application heads functioning alternately so as to apply the glue to the flaps clear of the path of the additional tools.
