Overvoltage protection for rectifiers - has control device igniting, by its voltage pulse, auxiliary spark gap whose arc ignites main spark gap

A spark gap is connected in parallel to the protective circuit and is non-conductive in the circuit normal operational state. In case of overvoltage interruption the spark gap is ignited and acts as a short circuiting device. The system contains a main (1) and an auxiliary spark gap (2). The auxiliary spark gap is ignited by a voltage pulse from a control device. The stricken light arc initiates the ignition of the main spark gap. The auxiliary spark gap is under an effect of a magnetic field which deflects its light arc into the region of the main spark gap. The protective system reduces the response delay of the short circuiting main spark gap.
