The rotary table can be switched forward in steps and is used for workpieces which require to be machined in consecutive stages. It comprises a lower table and, on the same axis, an upper table, primary and secondary toothed crowns on the upper side of the lower table and the lower side of the upper table. These crowns allow the upper table to be placed in differing angular positions in relation to the lower table. - The first toothed crown (7) has at least one tooth and the second (8) has at least two groups of multiple tooth gaps, the distance between adjacent gaps being equal, but that between the various groups is different. Each group whose number of gaps is not exactly divisible by the number of teeth in the first crown is repeated around the crown circumference as many times as there are teeth in the first crown (7).
