The mechanism indexes a strip of material having a number of pockets to a processing station, having a reciprocating driving finger before the station and swinging clear of the pockets on the return stroke. The pockets are formed by transverse joins in a strip folded in the lengthwise direction, and the finger engages with the joins. Between the finger and the station a friction belt engages with the strip, working in synchronism with the finger but at higher speed. The tension force, transmitted by slippage from belt to strip, is less than that necessary to feed it forward.
