摘要
The bow design for arctic icebreakers is intended to promote riding up on the ice, and downward and outward displacement of blocks. To this end the forward hull, with a raked stem, has S-shaped frames with inboard legs vertical to give the lower part a 'deadwood' form. The middle portion of these S-frames slopes upwards initially, flattening to produce a shoulder, sloping downwards progressively, outboard of the 'deadwood'. From where this shoulder passes through the design waterline to where it runs below the level of max. expected ice thickness this shoulder is horizontal. Further aft it runs roughly level, the hull below curving rapidly to the full lines.
