Iron-free aluminium chloride prodn - by hydrogen reduction of raw aluminium chloride

Iron-free AlCl3 is made from AlCl3 contaminated with FeCl3, which has been produced by chlorination of raw AlCl3, by a continuous process, suitable for large scale industrial treatment. The raw AlCl3 is mixed with H2 and led to a reaction zone at =600(600-900) degrees C. The reaction zone pref. possesses a large surface area and is packed with a filling material ne.g. quartz). The Fe produced is removed from the mixt. by a wall reaction and/or exposure to a magnetic field. The purified AlCl3 is condensed outside the reaction zone.
