Ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer contg. imide and ester gps. are prepd. by (a) reacting in a hydrocarbon solvent under reflux, a linear 1:1 ethylene-maleic anhydride copolymer (MW. 10,000-25,000) with an aliphatic satd. and/or unsatd. 8-20C alcohol, (b) adding one of the following amines: N-alkyl-1,3-diamino-propane, N-alkenyl, 1,3-diaminopropane, alkylamine or an alkenylamine, the alkyl- or alkenyl gps. contg. 8-20 atoms; or a mixt. of these amines and an organo-inorganic acid as catalyser and (c) reacting the mixt. under reflux to obtain the prod. The copolymer may be used as an adhesive for paper, pulp, ceramics, glass, plastics and metals. It may also be used as a protective coating for metals as well as non-metallic surfaces.
