Cyanogen prepn by oxidn of hydrogen cyanide - using aliphatic ethers or nitriles as solvent and copper nitrate catalyst

The prepn. of cyanogen (I) by catalytic oxidn. of HCN with O2 is improved when the solvent used is an aliphatic ether or nitrile contg. is not 5% water and =0.01 mole/1 CU-(NO3)2. (I) is an inter. e. g. for the sustained-release fertiliser oxamide. With these solvents reaction occurs more rapidly and ppt. of the catalyst does not occur.
