The laser amplitude is stabilised or changed by guiding the laser beam through a Zeeman-active, paramagnetic gas whose absorption line is brought into coincidence with the laser line by a magnetic field. The absorption coefficient of the paramagnetic gas is changed via the intensity variation of the magnetic field. Preferably a high gas pressure is used and the desired coincidence may be available even without any magnetic field. In such case the absorption coefficient is adjusted by a magnetic field. The system stabilises a molecule gas laser against amplitude variations caused by the gas composition or by varying spacing of the resonator mirrors. In this way even high frequency amplitude variations can be controlled.
